The Role of Public Libraries in the Community Development

This bachelor thesis presents the basic facts about the community development role of public libraries. The theoretical part discusses the subject matter of community libraries in general terms, formulating its essential concepts and referring to the definitions and terms used. The public perception of community libraries, and the manner in which these libraries approach community mapping, development and sustainability are also dealt with. The thesis further describes the problems community libraries face, the target groups they work with as well as the vision they follow in this undertaking. The aim of this thesis is to present community libraries in a broader context, to show how libraries of today operate in an environment in which new perspectives can be found through sharing, solidarity and collaboration with local communities, and how they can function as fully-fledged cultural, educational and social institutions. Naturally, the transformation that modern libraries are undergoing is not only reflected in the quality of the services provided and the activities organized, but also in the variability of the use of public space, documents, resources and technologies.
